My clip from today's show is called "To The Sea', a song I wrote for a friend that had passed that has served as a nice jam vehicle in a few key moments of my life thus far, this being one. The venue was a private party in Denville, NJ hosted by Jeff Saltzman, and the band was myself on acoustic guitar, my wife Julie on vocals (something the studio version never benefited from), from Railroad Earth Tim Carbone (fiddle) John Skehan (mandolin) and Andy Goessling (sax) plus Dave O'Donnell (banjo) and Len Mooney (keys). The song itself was once licensed by the Ford Motor Company for use as a promotional disc given out at the Texas State Fair, and this long version is perhaps my favorite.

I was recently working on a compilation of performances from Godfrey Daniels (that had to be scrapped due to the dread threat of lawsuit-some nice folks there, others not so much...) when I unearthed a digital soundboard transfer of David Grisman's historic 1989 performance at the club as David Grisman's Bluegrass Experience (thanks to a friend I will not name so isn't accused of anything ridiculous), a group also consisting of Del McCoury and his sons..this bluegrass standard was as a duo, as was the next track with Bill Monroe & Doc Watson from West Grove, PA right around the time of my birth....

Some new John Prine things have been circulating recently including this version of 'Rocky Mountain Time', one of my favorites from the Chicago writer's second album, 'Diamonds in the Rough' and a song I've never heard live save for this version, warts and all. Also recent to the trading circles is a soundboard recording of the team of Jerry Garcia & John Kahn from the Kabuki Theater in 1984.

There are 2 songs from 'Pat Garrett & Bill the Kid' a Sam Peckinpah-directed movie featuring an all-Bob Dylan soundtrack: 'Billy' as read by Gillian Welch on that vivid 1996 tour she did with partner David Rawlings and an out-take from the movie itself, a different version of the Final Theme from a Dylan boot called Pecos Blues.

Finishing things up today are 2 fiddle-based cuts from a particularly good time in Godfrey Daniels' history, the early-mid 90's. The New Blue Velvet Band visited without much fan-fare but included guitarist Eric Weissberg, producer-guitarist Jim Rooney and banjoist Bill Keith, as well as fiddler Kenny Kosek, best known as the fiddler in Jerry Garcia's acoustic band during their historic 1987 Broadway run that was captured on 'Almost Acoustic' and 'Ragged But Right' both on available on Grateful Dead Records. Here he demonstrated his solo prowess with a medley from that evening.

And last but certainly not least is something from the Red Clay Ramblers and vocalist/banjoist Tommy Thompson, a medley that showcases his lush yet honest songwriting and heart-felt vocals. Tommy has passed on but is part of the class being inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2011. If you haven't checked out the Hall, please do, or catch one of their mobile shows hosted by the ever effervescent Jeff Shirley at a school near you.

Listen to music everyday, it is good for you...
